In 1640 the first Jewish synagogue in the New World was built in New Amsterdam. In 1653 Manhattan Island was surrounded to the north by a wall. The street next to it was called Wall Street. The colony prospered under the administration of Peter Stuyvesant and in 1653 New Amsterdam was incorporated as a city. The title of ā€œAmsterdam,ā€ the typically busy and discombulating new movie written and directed by David O. Russell, refers to the events of a memorable Dutch idyll in 1918, toward the end of The main reason New Amsterdam was canceled was a fall in ratings. They slipped and are below most of the more established NBC dramas, which given the cost of the show, makes for a challenging pill to swallow for the studio.
