In a manual transmission, the oil is used as a lubricant for the gears and bearings. An automatic transmission is in fact a hydraulic motor driven by the engine. So in addition to acting as a lubricant, it is used as a working fluid to transfer power from the engine to the driveshaft.

Look for my posts on it. Reinstall the top two bolts, then remove the oil coller lines (two tubes going down from the front). Then reremove the two mounting bolts, but there is a hidden third on down low too. In addition to the gasket, you'll want two new OEM o-rings for the oil cooler's tubes.
1- yes you can check oil quality with the dip stick, theres some scanners and kit with sheet to get a overall idea of the oil viscosity. 2- electronics can fail, and i wont rely on that. GM got issues with this kind of sensors, cant tell if bmw will tho.
