I had bought the Sigma 70-200 f2.8 (non stabilized) in 2007, used it for a few months and traded it out for the Nikon 70-200 VR. So my review is with reference to 3 year old models and not the latest. Nikon over Sigma + Nikon has faster focus speeds + There were more keeper shots thanks to the VR feature compared to the non-OS Sigma Given the size and weight of this Nikon 70-200 mm 2.8 VR II lens, the large Nikon D800E camera is a more obvious combination than the much smaller Nikon D3200. Yet the crop factor of 1.5 of a Nikon DX camera like the Nikon D3200 makes such a lens an attractive partner.
What struck me is that despite this ‘latest’ model being called VRii, its version of VR is certainly not the latest, being 8 years old now. Compared to the 70-200/4 or 200-500/5.6, the VR is not particularly good. Additionally, the weight is basically the same as the old model I’ve got, i.e. it’s a bit of a beast!

The Nikon 70-200mm f/4 VR has almost the same optical quality of the Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8 VR II, but at half the price, size and weight. And that’s quite an achievement, since the Nikon 70-200 mm f/2.8 VR II is one of the best lenses we’ve tested so far. Since we don’t have to stick to 64 ISO anymore, f/4 is more than fast enough. Nikon 70-200mm ƒ/2.8G ED VR II AF not the least of which is its small profile and light weight. Still, lower cost 70-200mm f/2.8 options exist, such as the $2350 Nikon F-mount 70-200mm f/2.8E FL and some third-party options like those from Sigma or Tamron that are well under $2000 (though lower-end lenses overall).
